My husband and I are always trying to get better at planning and scheduling date nights. Another thing I’ve been looking forward to is family date nights as well to help entertain the kids while we are at home this summer. Family date night ideas are always welcome in my home.

We started fostering a young girl recently, and I’ve been looking for more creative ways to have fun at home as a family and create lasting memories.

The best part about these family date night ideas at home is that you don’t need much of a budget to pull them off. All you need is a little creativity and some of the items that may already be around your home.

1. Make Ice Cream and Watch a Movie

My family loves watching movies together, and we can do this very affordably thanks to streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus. To spice up your regular family movie nights, consider making a homemade treat to go with it.

You can get a small ice cream maker for under $20 on Amazon. You can even try to make ice cream without one. What you’ll need is sugar, milk, heavy whipping cream, and your own flavors or mix-ins.

2. Bingo Night and Strategy Games

Set up a family bingo game night and select a few prizes for the winners. You can make your own bingo game boards and chips at home or you can buy a bingo game kit online.

Other strategy games you might want to include Checkers, Connect 4, and Monopoly.

3. Make S’mores and Tell Stories

This is one of my favorite relaxing family date night ideas from home. If it’s a nice evening outside and you have a fire pit, try making some s’mores and listening to music or telling stories.

“Pass the Story” is an interactive group storytelling game where one person starts a story and then passes the ball to the next person to continue by adding a part to the story. This is a fun experience for younger kids.

4. Film and Edit Your Own Video

This activity may take some time, but it’s a great way to get creative and bond with your family. If you have a digital camera or camcorder, plan to shoot your own short film. Or you can film your family doing something like teaching someone how to play a new game or cooking a recipe.

Edit the video on your computer or phone. Then, post it to YouTube or send it to family.

Another thing you can do together is create a video slideshow of family pictures or memories from a particular vacation, event, or year. Take turns picking out which images to use and customizing the transitions, effects, and background music. This video photo album is an easy way to document some memories that your kids can look back on in the future.

5. Picnic and Water Games

Pack some sandwiches and snacks to set up an evening picnic in your yard or at a nearby park. You can also bust out the water guns, set up a slip n slide, or turn on the sprinklers so everyone can have fun.

6. Do Some Crafting

Pick a new craft that you can work on together as a family whether it’s painting something, making a scrapbook, or creating a bird feeder for outside.

You can also check out MichaelsKids.com for fun craft ideas that your kids will likely enjoy.

7. Homemade Pizza and House Projects

Instead of ordering takeout on a Friday night, get the ingredients and materials to make your own pizzas at home. Allow each person to create their own person pizza with toppings of their choice.

Then, pick a project to tackle that needs to be completed around the house. This is a clever way to get the whole family involved in a project and still make some memories together. You can start planting in the garden, declutter someone’s room, or paint an accent wall in your home for fun.

8. Scavenger Hunt

My son’s birthday is in January so I have to get creative with ideas for outings and experiences as its super cold around that time of year. For his 6th birthday we were living in an apartment and had a few family members over for a small party.

The theme was pirates, and I created a pirate-themed scavenger hunt that the kids really enjoyed. Ever since then, I’ve been wanting to do plan a scavenger hunt family date night just for fun.

You can get as creative as you want when planning your scavenger hunt. Choose a theme or research themes and clues online. Decide whether you want to have it in the house or extend the hunt to the outdoors as well.

Grab a few prizes for the winner from the dollar store.

Summary – Fun Family Date Night Ideas at Home

These fun family date night ideas at home have probably barely scratched the surface in terms of which activities you may want to try out over the next few weeks. Involve your loved ones in the planning process and keep it budget friendly by starting with supplies and materials that you already have at home.
